Restoring Antiquarian Leather Bindings

In this 2-hour+ tutorial video, one of the UK’s foremost bookbinders and restorers demonstrates how to repair antiquarian leather bindings, using techniques developed and honed over many decades.

Sympathetic repair and restoration are vital to the longevity of leather-bound books. Sadly, bookbinders with the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to carry out such work are increasingly hard to find, and the opportunities for learning the relevant history and techniques are similarly few and far between.

In this tutorial video Trevor Lloyd MBE, one of the UK’s most knowledgable, experienced and highly respected traditional bookbinders, discusses the tools, materials and techniques he employs in his day-to-day work repairing and restoring antiquarian leather bindings.

As well as the practical step-by-step demonstration of all the processes involved, Trevor also explains why each binding style requires particular treatments, and imparts invaluable knowledge, tips and tricks that he has gleaned and developed during his long career.

We see how aged and deteriorating leather is consolidated, how new leather is prepared, and how damaged joints, spines and corners are repaired, each process being shown in close-up and explained in detail.

The delicate balance between aesthetics and durability, the importance of historical accuracy, and the responsibility of ensuring the longevity of each and every volume should all be inherent considerations for the conscientious restorer. That Trevor is eager to share his knowledge in order to help others with these crucial decisions is testament to his passion for his craft.
